Canal at Croxton

Bumped into a big bloke called John P. yesterday on the canal in Middlewich, Cheshire, UK. He was trying to get me to do a direct debit in support of the Canal & River Trust. I have to say he was very polite and knowledgeable, not pushy, and was not upset when I had to refuse because of spending a good deal of time away in Portugal. We continued chatting and he explained why support is needed. The Canal & River Trust is a charitable trust that was set up to look after the waterways of England and Wales. The transfer of ownership from the previous government-owned operator, British Waterways, took place on 2 July 2012. It is expected that the inland waterways currently managed by the Environment Agency will transfer to the trust in 2015. Middlewich stands on the junction of the Trent & Mersey and the Shropshire Union canals. An important hub in its day. Today the canals are a valuable leisure amenity for many. Good on you John.
